Shijing: A Poetic Portrait Series

Statement

This series is inspired by classical Chinese poetry, not as a direct illustration of specific texts, but as a visual interpretation of their emotional tone and aesthetic language.

In traditional poetry, meaning is often suggested rather than stated. Imagery, silence, and subtle gestures carry emotional weight beyond explicit narration. This approach informs the construction of the images: restrained poses, minimal composition, and controlled lighting are used to create a space where emotion remains implicit and open to interpretation.

The figure is not presented as a character within a defined story, but as a presence suspended between expression and stillness. Through costume, posture, and atmosphere, the images evoke a sense of quiet introspection, where beauty lies in what is withheld as much as in what is shown.

Rather than recreating historical references, the project seeks to translate a poetic sensibility into a contemporary visual form, exploring the relationship between image, silence, and emotion.
